You will often find me with my head in a book, and my favourite area of reading is non-fiction and personal development.
There is nothing greater than spending even 30 mins of your day learning something new that you can apply to your life, and without doubt these next books I will share have changed my life when I read them (and sometimes continue to re-read them multiple times).
Really there is no power in knowledge unless you take the step to apply what you have read and enjoy so I hope you will love these books as much as I do when I first read them on my financial security and freedom journey.
(Links in this article may include affiliate URLS where I will get a very small portion of the cost for directing you to the item.
This cost helps the running of my blog to give you value and I will only ever suggest products I love and use myself).
Not a fan of reading?
I strongly recommend Audible for listening to one free audio book each month – I use it when travelling and when I need a little bit of “me time” during a busy working day.
6 LIFE CHANGING Personal Development Books to read in 2020
The 4-hour Work Week by Tim Ferris
We all might dream of leaving the 9-5 job eventually but this book was one of the first to show anyone the way they can actually achieve it, and ideally only work four hours a week maintaining a business. His book details his road to financial success and the steps he took along the way.
Tim stresses that there is no need to wait to change your life and how you make money, and every reason not to, especially in unpredictable economic times.
Whether your dream is escaping the rat race, experiencing high-end world travel, earning a monthly five-figure income with zero management, or just living more and working less, this book is the blueprint.
Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins
The ultimate program for improving the quality of every aspect of your life (personal or business, physical or emotional) Awaken the Giant Within gives you the tools you need to immediately become the master of your own fate.
I’m a huge fan of all of Tony’s work given that his life’s mission is to help others through painful events and give them passion to do whatever their heart’s desire is and focus on making that dream a reality.
His techniques within this book are wonderful, and they have offered much strength and power to me as an individual as I seek and work towards my own dreams and goals.
The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama
In this unique and important book, one of the world’s great spiritual leaders offers his practical wisdom and advice on how we can overcome everyday human problems and achieve lasting happiness.
Covering all key areas of human experience, the book applies the principles of Tibetan Buddhism to everyday problems and reveal how one can find balance and complete spiritual and mental freedom.
I particularly enjoy this book for it’s peacefulness and calmness that each of the topics and responses provide to the reader, and without doubt one that you will return to mediate on and learn from many times.
Dynamic Laws of Prosperity by Catherine Ponder
Catherine Ponder is regarded as one of the major prosperity (wealth, health, happiness) writers of the past century, and despite this book being written in the 1960s initially – all of the techniques and methods described on how to take control of your thoughts and own destiny are still powerful today.
I particularly love to listen to the audio book of this text, as her old school “no messing” style of delivering the key messages are ones to be cherished.
Recorded as a series of lectures – In these lectures, Ponder personally guides you step by step through the Dynamic Laws of Prosperity.
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
Psycho-cybernetics is a term coined by Dr. Maxwell Maltz that means “steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world: peace of mind”.
Since its first publication in 1960, Maltz’s landmark best seller has inspired and enhanced the lives of more than 30 million readers.
Maltz was the first researcher and author to explain how the self-image (a term he popularised) has complete control over an individual’s ability to achieve (or failure to achieve) any goal.
And he developed techniques for improving and managing self-image – visualisation, mental rehearsal, relaxation – that have informed and inspired countless motivational gurus, sports psychologists, and self-help practitioners for more than 50 years.
I will teach you to be Rich by Ramit Sethi
Without doubt, the most practical and useful Financial management book I have ever read, and the one book that started my own Financial Freedom Journey.
Step by Step this book will show you how to get Money Smart – show you exactly how to stream line your Budgets, Know your Credit Score, and be Money Smart and “Be Rich”.
This is the book I would recommend to my children as the starting place for Financial knowledge, and one that I recommend is bought and put straight into practice.
I love this book immensely because it holds a special place in my heart for being the first money book I read as you know, but also because it is so practical and will change your life.
Be sure to get the UK edition of this book as he is based in the US for his content, but I love the fact that this money classic had a UK equivalent for us to enjoy.

The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles
Regarded as one of the most successful self-help books of the past century, this small but concise money mindset book covers everything at the core of money success you will need.
This isn’t a step by step tutorial book but rather a book setting out the course of how to use your mind to create the level of wealth and success you wish.
Cited as being the inspiration for many of the great self help classics today, you will love this book and feel the need to re-read it many times through your journey to financial success ahead by covering mindset, visualisation and goal setting.
I know they will bring you great success ahead if you read and apply some of the principles contained within them.
