Live your Legend – inspiration from a simple TED talk discovery

How many of us really have time each day to learn something new?

We are balancing work, life, people, families, money, health..the list goes on. But when I get opportunities to learn and do something different in my day, it can feel like I’m truly making a difference in my little world (aka to me!).

Recently I’ve been thinking about the ways I spend my “digital screen time” each day, and really what I’m choosing to watch/learn from the various devices that seem merged with normal everyday living these days like computers, TV, Ipads, phones.

I love to learn and for many years have been a huge fan of TED talks – where you seem to be able to dip in and out of the most random topics by the world’s greatest and newest speakers – and learn something up to date and current to take forward into your life, maybe even change how you think about something for good.

I’ve been prompted to come back to watch a few TED talks over recent few days, and today came across one that has made me stop and think.  It was called “How to find work you love” by Scott Dinsmore.  Very interesting talk that I randomly clicked on, but by going a few steps on what I learnt changed me today.

After watching the talk, I thought I think I might see what his company is up to now as it was all about prompting people to live their legend and do something great with their lives. What I found though truly showed he kinda knew what he was talking about, and really made life was it should be.

This quote really stuck out:

“You’re the average of the 5 people you spend most time with” Jim Rohn

His last blog post on the website was about how he wanted to digitally detox and the risks of always being connected/disconnected from real life.  You can even take it as we are the sum of the 5 people or things that we let demand our attention the most.  Majoring in minor things is never a good idea.

He was going to in September this year take a trip with his wife and complete his next great yearly challenge. And then of course come back to return to normal working life full steam ahead and recharged.

However, you see that the next blog post tells the audience that sadly Scott died on that very mountain he was attempting to climb.

He wrote on this blog these inspiring ideas to follow:

The following beliefs drive most of my actions:

  1. We are capable of a lot more than we give ourselves credit for.
  2. You don’t have to do things the way they’ve always been done.
  3. There’s usually a better way.
  4. Most things aren’t as impossible as we think. They must be tested.
  5. Exploring and getting out on adventures adds clarity to most of life’s confusions.
  6. We can all do work we love, we just have to understand ourselves first – and create the proper surroundings.
  7. Environment. Is. Everything. The fastest way to do the things you don’t think can be done is to hang around people already doing them. Choose your friends wisely and brainwash the impossible.
  8. The education and experiments never end.”

Pretty powerful stuff.
